Hummingbird feeders

Is a controversial topic to talk about sugar feeders. Scientists have different points of view. In our humble opinion is to suggest you please avoid firmly to support places with feeders more than 4 or 5. Not doing so it might be dangerous for such a great bird to easily forget about its job of pollinating flowers and as a result of it the recovering of the forest. Please think a bit about it. Nature will retribute with lots of benefits to all of us for the present and the future.

  • The Origins of Hummingbirds Are Still a Major Mystery
  • Ancient Hummingbirds Were European
  • A new species of high-altitude hummingbird may already be in trouble
  • We are killing the hummingbirds

Hello! I am Daniela, Ecologist of the Javeriana University and I take the initiative to spread this message because I consider it a responsibility of my professional career and because it is important to take it into action today, that attracting hummingbirds through artificial drinking sugared feeders, has become very popular. We can attract our homes and even promote healthy nutrition and proliferation of these mystical and spectacular animals, HOWEVER The feeders of sugared water are a very harmful option for hummingbirds. Sugar has very high amounts of glucose that can lead to hummingbirds develop diabetes and other eating disorders, this not only affects the hummingbird that visits the feeders, but also the species in general, since this individual can develop a type of hereditary diabetes and his offspring will have the disease in turn. This leads to a decrease in life expectancy, to the point where hummingbirds do not reach the age of reproductive maturity and therefore, can not generate more offspring, causing the population of the species to decline ... It is a phenomenon that It is being given, by the tourists attractions that hummingbirds represent, more, the affectations caused by sugar feeders are already being evident.

Among them, two of the most serious:

    1) Health problems in hummingbirds, associated with excessive glucose consumption or intoxication.
    2) Reduction of pollinating agents hummingbirds act as pollinators, as do bees. By offering them an easy alternative to obtain food, such as drinking fountains, hummingbirds "get used" to not having to strain too much, or go through long distances looking for the ideal glucose percentage for its maintenance. When this happens, they stop "traveling" from flower to flower, looking for their food and therefore, stop being active pollinators that allow the reproduction of a large number of plant species with flower. However, there is a natural, healthy and sustainable way to attract hummingbirds and it is through their healthy nutrition, through their normal source of sugar: flowers with a high percentage of nectar.
